How many times have you heard your child say, “Watch me!”? Children need and want to be recognized and seen. Your attention is greatly encouraging and your role as a parent is clear. Rewarding effort and a job well done encourages our children to try and do more. When we encourage children, we teach them that we accept them for who they are, which strengthens the relationship we have with our children. Next time you are rewarding your child for a job well done, remember to describe to them what they did. Saying things like, “You were so helpful! You put all your toys away in the right spot!” or “Thank you for being kind to your sister and helping them up when they fell.” The stronger the relationship you have with your child will ensure positive behavior.
