Dukes and Duchesses Newsletter East: May 2011

Goodness, I can’t believe it is already May – spring certainly has a way of speeding up time, it seems.  The best part about the warmer weather is that it has provided us with our first classroom ‘pet’ (or should I say pets?), the tadpoles, which the children seem to enjoy immensely.  (A special thanks to Tyler’s family for bringing in their bounty of tadpoles – now all the classrooms are able to observe the frog life cycle).  In an effort to foster the class’ observational skills, the kids each take turns writing in our science journal and log whatever changes/activities they see happening in the tank.  While there haven’t been any readily discernable changes to their shape and size yet, we know that it is only a matter of time and can hardly wait until we have more frogs then we know what to do with.  Speaking of which, I have been asked repeatedly by all the children if they could take a frog or two home with them when they are all grown.  It is fine by me if they do, but I have told the children I wasn’t sure yet what we were going to do with them yet, allowing you to decide if a pet frog is right for your home.

As I am sure most of you have heard by now, I am flying home for my graduation and will be out of the classroom the 6th-16th.  Miss Kathy will be filling in for me during this time and has a number of fun activities planned, including getting a jump on our garden – with a little sunshine, rain and luck, we will have a classroom full of ‘green thumbs’ by harvest time!

Last month I mentioned that we would be making a class quilt, and that is still very much on the agenda, but April came and went so quickly, that I have decided to hold off on that until the week I return from CT.  I may have bitten off a bit more than I can chew with this project, but I love a challenge and fortunately have a very patient grandmother who knows her way around a sewing machine quite well!

Finally, with the sunnier weather we will be outside a lot more, so if you haven’t already done so, please bring in (non-aerosol) sunscreen and fill out the release form so I can apply it to the kids as needed.  Please note that we cannot apply bug repellent to the children, and that includes sunscreen containing bug repellent as well.

Other than reminding you that the Academy will be closed May 30th for Memorial Day, that is all the news for now…see you in the classroom!!!

Miss Remy
